I'm big into min-maxing and doing the best I can for the team of friends I play with, so I usually play gunner when they're all melee or hunting horn if a song is needed, however for melee DPS I am wondering if Gunlance is viable. Gunlance Guide
Much like it’s cousin, the Lance, the Gunlance is a bastion of defense while having impressive range and damage. It’s basic attacks are a mix of stabs, sweeps and slams. Instead of a charging ability like the Lance, the Gunlance can fire off shotgun blasts. While not truly a ranged attack, these rounds ignore the toughness of the monster, allowing damage to be dealt to parts that otherwise couldn’t be touched.

Final Tips
The Lance and Gunlancehave the strongest Block in the game, so players electing to go with this weapon should take advantage of that. While other players, even ones who use a Shield may Evade more than Block, with the Gunlance it’s the other way around. Practice Blocking and learn the capabilities of your Shield so you aren’t afraid to stand your ground. It is worth noting however, that the Gunlance does not have access to Counter Thrust or Power Guard and so cannot buff their Blocking like the Lance can.
The Gunlance will tear through Sharpness when firing, so be prepared for that because you will use the “Gun” portion often. Be sure to keep an eye on your Sharpness Gauge and use a Whetstone when you need to.
You can fire your Gunlance while airborne, so be sure to keep that in mind because you can combo it into some wicked attacks.
Lastly, as mentioned above, the rounds fired from the Gunlance pierces the resistances of the monster you are fighting and so deal excellent damage and are a great way to break parts or hit places that generally are well protected. Learning what places these are on monsters will help improve your efficiency with this weapon greatly.
